Detainees tortured to death by US military

Ekklesia is reporting on a study of US military records. These show that at least 8 (possibly more) detainees have been tortured to death by the US military during the Iraq war. And 34 deaths meet the US military’s own definition of a homicide. However, only 12 people have yet been punished – and the worst penalty imposed was only 5 months in jail.

I might be more convinced if those who represent “radical theology” and are committed to the anti-war message would provide a link to the alleged report. I didn’t notice this on Drudge, and it would seem to be big news.

It also may be clarifying to recognize that the justice system doesn’t move at light speed. David Camm was arrested for killing his family in September of 2000, and his trial is just wrapping up this week. That’s 6 years, longer than anyone has been in Gitmo.

Justice doesn’t move quickly, no. But there has been a notable lack of prosecutions – not convictions, just prosecutions. The continued denial that there is anything wrong with what is happening at Guantanamo Bay, in Afghanistan or in Iraq (beyond a few “isolated cases”) is worrying because it says that the US regards morality as something that matters only within its own borders. (BTW – the report is listed on the website of the authors, Human Rights First, but it costs US$15.)
